Dîner chez “Comme ça “

Where is it possible to get good French food here in LA?

I came across this restaurant while walking on Melrose. The name sounded French so I checked it out online. Menu had French inspiration with a touch of American cuisine.

Dinner was great! The food is just wonderful. We went on Tuesday evening (Burger night, yes I know doesn’t seem too French)

Definitely try the Calamari to start (share with 2/3 people, it’s a huge uncut calamari! Never seen it served like that before)

Then, the Burger is amazing! It’s huge, has crunchy onions, the American Cheese melts in your mouth and the meat is very tasty. The fries are also really good. Only on Tuesday night, you have  a choice of Turkey, Chicken and Beef burger I just tried the beef burger.

I ordered the Mussels and they were delicious (creamy sauce) . It’s a big entrée so you can share it and maybe order something else (mm the Burger maybe?)

We were so full, we didn’t need any desert.

The service is a bit French oriented (the waiters do not rush at your table every two seconds to check if everything is okay. I am obviously used to calling waiters in Paris before they actually come at my table so that was not an issue)

Bon Appétit!

Dinner @ Mercado

Tercera time at Mercado! I really enjoy it. Santa Monica, nice crowd, laid back people and good atmosphere.

Always order to share. We usually get the basics and its a great deal.

The Poblano peppers in creamy sauce with fresh-baked tortillas to start, then fish tacos are delicious and black beans and rice of course.  Do not forget to get the poblano pepper spicy drink. Yum!

The food there is spicy but not too hot! I never ate spicy food before LA. You cannot have a great culinary experience living here, if you do not force yourself with spicy food.

Life is about trying new stuff. I always thought I’d have indigestion issues if I ate peppers or wasabi … One day, I was eating dinner at someone’s house. The host was mexican and the salad on the table (which appeared to me as thin dices of cucumber of tomatoes)  was in fact, a salad of fresh poblano peppers in dices with tomatoes. Looked exactly the same ! I love this salad usually and decided to take a big bite with a spoon. It felt very crunchy at first, my tongue started to burn a few seconds afterwards. I couldn’t even smell anything anymore except for this hot spice that was coming from my mouth. I swallowed it all and thought my throat was going to hurt forever.

I must say, that jumping from “not being used to anything spicy at all” to “eating like a real mexican” affected me. The next day, I was sick. Nevertheless, thanks to this one in a lifetime experience, I now can eat spicy food when I want. I just cannot take any more surprises though. I really enjoy it and I am getting there step-by-step. Mexican cuisine has so much to offer. It’s generally affordable, very tasty and the people cooking it are the friendliest.

After dinner at Mercado, I’d recommend you either walk or drive (very close) to Beachy cream to get the coffee or hot chocolate (spicy) organic homemade ice-cream with the pretzel cone!

Bon appétit!

Always the same Fashion Bags !

Okay, so since I’ve been here, I’ve noticed that in LA (Westside), if it’s not Longchamps, it’s Louis Vuitton. Longchamps has a great quality/price for what it is (only leather on the handle though) the rest is just cloth. Nevertheless, wouldn’t you rather get something no one has? I mean I get it, it’s French and maybe a couple of years ago it wasn’t famous at all. Every woman has one here! And the colors they’re chosing are not even original. It’s a cloth bag so get a colorful one. We’re lucky enough to be in a sunny city, so go wild! If you’re wearing classic colors to work (blue, black, grey) get a yellow one. It’s also a great present for a friend because it’s quite cheap (50 euros) As for the LV Bags ,I cannot stand the pattern. It’s the same thing, it has to be either customize (add your initials or a colorful stripe) If you want to spend the money, get an original piece. bumped into that red Imageone earlier in Brentwood. I would love to understand why you feel like buying  these Longchamps bags? Is it because it’s French? Because you see other women wearing it? It’s a great brand so I’m obviously just intrigued to know.

Lunch at Blue Plate

Blue Plate  has no outside seating (except two little tables on the front). That’s okay though because the service is good. The food is not original but it’s Good and that’s what we’re looking for. An American brunch/breakfast/lunch: perfect spot.

What I love about the US is that: half salad/soup and sandwich combo you can get! Yes, if you do not feel like eating an entire sandwich or wrap you can get a soup. I got the Matzo Ball Soup (like my Grandma’s) and the tuna melt. Delicious!

You must try the turkey, coleslaw, thousand island wrap too! And please remember to get one of their fresh juices (cucumber/apple) Bon Appétit.

Day Two

Are people in LA only in real estate or artists? It’s incredible each time I’m having lunch or drinking a coffee and listening to the conversation people are having, turns out the only subjects they talk about are “brokers, lots, design” or “script, agent”. Just to let you know, I usually do not listen to other people. I feel it’s intimate and impolite to listen. We are not invited to do so and maybe they are sharing very deep and secret thoughts. However, I have to say that people here talk loudly and do not really care if anyone listens. In general they even want others to listen kind of self marketing. Maybe they think what they are saying is worth being listened to. I was having lunch at tavern in Brentwood. Great spot! People were having lunch and spontaneously telling their table-neighbours that the chocolate cake looked amazing and huge. Who would do that in Paris? It would be much different and seen as an intrusion in one’s private life and intimate kingdom. Why is it that here I feel great sitting alone in a fancy/trendy spot? I do not care no one is judging me for being alone, looking at me and feeling pity. Yes I am eating alone and so what? I am inspired and I am writing this article. It is almost impossible for a young woman to sit down at a Costes restaurant (trendy place) in Paris and not being viewed as a weird person or maybe even as a gold digger. I remember this story a friend once told me about this girl who decided to get breakfast in a really trendy spot and who felt so horrible because men came up to her. Yes she was wearing a short dress but whatever! Who would care here in LA? All women have the freedom to wear whatever they feel like and yet I’m guessing they get judged from time to time but they do not care so much. I love how people share their opinion here on food, ask for advice, it even gets really specific sometimes. You do not feel like you’re bothering your waiter, he is there to help you , serve you and answer your deepest questions. For instance: “which burger would you recommend?”, “which desert is your favorite”? It’s not something you’d do in France. People are not really there to tell you what to do.Isn’t it such a big responsibility though to choose for you? Isn’t the waiter entering your private life in a way when he is chosing for you and telling you which one he thinks is the best. You know what’s great about it: he doesn’t even care if you follow his advice, he just wants you to be happy, enjoy your meal. At the end of the day, everyone is happy. He did his job, he served you and waited (answered your questions for so long) he waits, that’s what he does … Isn’t waiting such a waste of time and energy? What is he really waiting for? For you to sign the bill? Get his tip?

Waiting has always been something one should explore. I know a lot of different artists already explored the concept, writing plays about it, making movies, writing amazing poems … What is so captivating with this idea of waiting? Waiting for who, for what and where? Where do you usually wait? Okay, we wait in line. That’s the first idea that comes to mind. The physical wait we experience daily (supermarket, movie theater, transportation …) Then, I’d say waiting at a red light in your car (sometimes these lights can be pretty long)

What if these moments were golden? What if we finally stopped what we were doing and focus on more important stuff? I mean it’s not like you’re going to do anything productive in these “waiting moments” you may as well start thinking about what comes to mind. Sometimes even listening to a song on the radio while you are at a red light can bring back so many different thoughts and feelings. It’s amazing how the human’s mind has this capacity to change so quickly. One minute, one can be totally depressed, low, thinking about his bad day at work … and during maybe one of these “waiting period”, one can realise how lucky he is for this or that reason, reminiscing about the past (good times), looking at the pink sky and asking oneself why not feel good again? Why not fight this negative feeling and just enjoy this moment?

Some would say we are all waiting … Waiting for the end I guess. It’s a rather depressing way to see life. Therefore, make your wait incredible! Do not wait for things to happen, make them happen. Read, listen to music, talk to people, make new encounters and you’ll find that waiting gets a lot more interesting. Do not wait for the sake of waiting but always remember you should cherish these moments, because they become the deepest and most truthful ones.

Hama Sushi Dinner

Great spot in Venice, sitting at the sushi bar . Let the chef take care of you and you’ll be surprise. If you enjoy white fish and lemon just get the Chiso Lemon Roll it’s delicious.

We do not have anything similar in France. Japanese places are usually held by Chinese people. They serve exactly the same which is sashimi combo (salmon, tuna and white fish) usually not so fresh and not tasty at all.

We also have these chains of sushi take outs which are getting there (step by step) it’s more of a revisité (revisit) japanese food. A lot of different rolls with ingredients which are not at all japanese (cream cheese roll, lox, even nutella rolls with eggs) I wouldn’t say this is fine japanese cuisine but when you’re starving in Paris and need a light lunch it’s enough.

SushiShop is doing an awesome job lately, hiring French chefs (Thierry Marx) to “revisit” their menus, adding foie gras dishes/sushi, caviar and French style tartares. You guys can already check it out in NYC, they just opened a location there.

I’ll never trade any French japanese place for an average LA one though!

This is the best (in my opinion):

Shiso Lemon Roll Yellowtail, green onions and tempura shiso leaf inside, with thin slices of Halibut, and lemon on top with yuzu juice, chili oil, and salt  19.00

(you can also order half rolls)

Day One

I’m a Parisian woman and moving here was a complete transformation in my normal routine. I used to live in NYC which had a touch of Paris’ lifestyle: the atmosphere, restaurants, bars, clubs, art, shopping, walking in the streets … LA is just another world, another scene, one has to figure out how he is going to experience the transformation before becoming a happy resident. Here, you cannot do anything, meet anyone, without using your car. The car says a lot about the driver. You must choose your car intelligently, strategically. If you ask someone to go for a walk, a “promenade”, the answer is NO.

You do not walk here, you drive and you love it.

The funny thing though, is that I used to drive everywhere in Paris.

So why am I complaining? I just feel that to discover a city, you need to walk. Not using a guide, but walk your own way, your own path … Have your own vision, encounters, try new stuff and have your own opinion. That’s the true discovery. And, I must admit it’s really wonderful to get to know a city.

I feel that getting to know a city is like falling in love. You just exchange thoughts, dialogue, experience great moments, bad fights, laugh, cry, make love …

You get lost, you find your way and you feel so happy when you finally know where you’re going. You create your own habits, you tell your friends about them. You feel you own the city like if you’d been living there forever.

I know that for a fact since I moved to NYC and had this feeling for a while.

First comes the discovery, shy rather slow period. The parallel with the relationship is obvious. You do not jump directly in someone’s life, you take your time, get to know the individual, show who you are without showing too much. That’s exactly how it works with the new city.

What if the city is spread out? Los Angeles is huge. How can you deal with that? How can you fall in love?

It’s not going to be easy, it’s going to take time and efforts. But what is more desirable than discovering and getting to know someone who has so much to offer: different aspects of his personality, who is always surprising you and whom you always have something to learn from.

Los Angeles is not just Los Angeles. Before I experienced it and decided to start the discovery process, I hated LA. I thought LA was Sunset Bd, Hollywood, the movie stars, Disney and Universal Studios. I didn’t know anything and didn’t even want to know. I felt it could never be compared to San Francisco or New York City. I felt LA was empty. I was so wrong…

But it takes time … And you have to be patient if you want to start your journey.

LA is about the people of LA, it’s about the diversity of things and the beauty of its melting pot.

A rainy day in LA

As a French woman, I love rainy days in LA. Turns out I get to feel Parisian again.

I am not even complaining about the situation here, I just go with it and I love it. I can finally wear the rainy day clothes I brought (which do not take so much space in my LA closet)

I usually wear a leather jacket here when it rains. The water does not ruin the material and you can finally enjoy being warm and stylish without feeling stupid here in LA.

I have to say you never feel weird wearing anything here. NYC can really be laid back as you have seen either in real life, magazines or on fashion, trend blogs. People mix colours, style and they are never judged. I love this city for that. Paris is a bit different, we have our own codes and rules. It can get as crazy as the Tax code there trust me! You must follow basic steps and then you can get a little inventive once you get your Bachelor’s Degree on how to dress like a Parisian. I love how friends and acquaintances have this ability and need to share their vision on style in Paris. I guess it is so helpful for women who die to become Parisian and earn this natural look. How can someone do that if they live across the world in a city where everyone is wearing GUESS, Express and Abercrombie stuff?

Being sexy in Paris is so different from the LA sexy. It’s the opposite if you must know. You have rules and codes on how you cannot show too much at once in Paris. But I’ve always asked myself if this rule was not a reaction against bad and gloomy/rainy weather? I must say it cannot have any link with the weather since in London, the women show a lot (really tight dresses, mini skirts and low neckline) all in one outfit.

I have my precious leather jackets, it is an obsession I have and it will never stop. Some have jewelers obsessions, I’ll say my jackets are my jewellery. They make everything so easier. You can be wearing a pair of jeans and a random T-shirt and look amazing with the right jacket.

LA is a difficult place for finding leather goods and especially jackets … Okay, the big and notorious brands make leather jackets. Nevertheless, the thing is, the perfect leather jacket is a unique one you want to wear over and over and over … It becomes a second skin …It can come from a famous brand, a vintage store or a small boutique, it just has to do with the impact it has on you when you first try it on.

I was in Deauville (Normandy) a couple of years ago and went to the Printemps (big French department store) I was not looking for anything in particular and I was walking around, touching the material (I always do that to feel the product), looking at the cut of some pieces. I stopped, didn’t even look at the brand and walked in its direction … Yes, I had just experienced my first crush on a jacket. That’s how it all started. I saw it, felt it, even smelt it. I finally tried it on, they had my size … The fit was perfect and I decided I was going to wear it over some light sweaters, with big scarves and even with cool dresses.

First LA Bfast

I decided to go for the frozen waffles at Wholefoods. They do not have so much taste but with a little butter and honey it’s actually okay. I cut some apples and cooked them in a pot for a few minutes (add three spoons of water, honey and cinnamon)

Yogurt in LA is really good if you buy it in a glass container. Greek yogurt can be delicious. I miss my French dairy products though I have to admit.

Peets coffee is delicious, we have a machine that requires coffee beans. This was new for me. I was used to the Nespresso machine which was usually only expresso shots. I love the smell of the coffee that comes out from this machine and I love the whole process of making it happen. The fresh beans that finally end in your cup with a little milk …
